Synopsis

Director’s note

It is personally important for me to tell stories about queer people, as this is part of my own self-expression and answers my need to see women loving women on screen. At the same time, the darker quality of the story has nothing to do with queerness—it could be any kind of love ruined by possessiveness. As a filmmaker I am drawn to stories with moral ambiguity, because I want to understand why we do things that hurt ourselves and the people we love. I have always been fascinated by coming-of-age stories, because when you are young, one summer, one friendship, or one love can transform your life forever: you see deeper meaning in everything, you are learning about life, you experience things for the first time, and those memories remain with you, shaping who you become. This is something I wanted to relive when making this film, and for me it is the emotional core of the story. But I also wanted to tell it in a different style—almost in the spirit of Scarface—with a larger-than-life approach usually reserved for adult men and their codes of honor. Just because the film centers on young women does not mean it needs to be only gentle and subtle; I realized I can also use the big brush, that I don’t need to go small.” (Variety, 2022)
